Long ago, in the cold northern New Mexico winter, the men of the village would go up into the mountains, disguise themselves as scary old men, and then go down into the village to see who had been good and who had been bad. Villagers would gather around large bonfires or luminaries, where grandparents, wearing masks and covered in soot, would tease the children and then make them sing or dance around the fire. Afterward, everyone would enjoy a feast of traditional delicacies likebizcochitos(anise cookies) andempanadas(dumplings with sweet fillings).
