Books About People of Color

Books del Sur's primary objective is to curate books from Spanish-speaking countries in order to disrupt the monolingual narrative commonly found in U.S. classrooms. We are inspired and guided by the work of the #weneeddiversebooks movement and the Cooperative Children's Book Center (CCBC) at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Therefore, our secondary objective at Books del Sur is to ensure that all narratives are represented in the books as well. While most of our books are written by people of color, many of the people in the books do not present as people of color. We recognize that representation is important and have done our best to curate a collection of Spanish books that are About People of Color. We selected this category based on the data that the CCBC has collected over the years, which we summarized in the following graph.

Books By or About Children of Color by Year of Publication

The source and full data set are available on the CCBC website.
