"Today is the day of the butterflies!" Julianita tells her grandfather excitedly, as they walk down Carmen Street to school one morning. Today is the day that Julianita and her friends have been waiting for: they will learn about monarch butterflies. But what's even more exciting is that they will each get their own caterpillar to breed! When Julianita gets hers, she names it Tigre for its striking yellow and black stripes. Mrs. Rodríguez teaches her students everything about the monarch. But Julianita already knows that they fly south thousands of miles every winter, because her grandfather remembers seeing the beautiful monarchs in his town in the highlands of Mexico. As children feed and care for their caterpillars, they eagerly anticipate the transformation from caterpillar to chrysalis to butterfly. When Tigre finally comes out of his chrysalis, Julianita doesn't want to let her go. He worries that he will lose his way to Mexico. "Tigre knows the way to Mexico because it is in his heart," his grandfather reassures him. She feels sad to see Tigre fly away, but Julianita knows that one day he will follow her to her grandfather's magical Mexico.
