Abuelos
Hace mucho tiempo, en el frío invierno del norte de Nuevo México, los hombres de la aldea subían a las montañas, se disfrazaban de viejos atemorizantes y luego bajaban a la aldea para ver quién había sido bueno y quién había sido malo. Los aldeanos se reunían alrededor de grandes fogatas o luminarias, donde los abuelos, con máscaras y cubiertos de hollín, molestaban a los niños y luego los hacían cantar o bailar alrededor del fuego. Después, todos disfrutarían de una fiesta con delicias tradicionales como bizcochitos (galletas de anís) y empanadas (empanadas con rellenos dulces).
Long ago, in the cold northern New Mexico winter, the men of the village would go up into the mountains, disguise themselves as scary old men, and then go down into the village to see who had been good and who had been bad. Villagers would gather around large bonfires or luminaries, where grandparents, wearing masks and covered in soot, would tease the children and then make them sing or dance around the fire. Afterward, everyone would enjoy a feast of traditional delicacies like bizcochitos (anise cookies) and empanadas (dumplings with sweet fillings).
