Award-winning creator Duncan Tonatiuh brings a beloved Mexican legend to life Honorable Mention of the Pura Belpré Award for Illustrator and an ALA/ALSC Notable Children's Book!

Itza was the most beautiful princess on earth, and many suitors traveled from far and wide to woo her. Even though she was the daughter of the emperor, Itza did not want to marry a man of power and wealth. Instead, she fell in love with Popoca, a brave warrior fighting in her father's army, who offered her no riches, but a promise to stay by his side forever.

The emperor did not want his daughter to marry a simple warrior, although he recognized Popoca's bravery. So he offered him a deal: if the warrior managed to defeat his enemy, Jaguar Claw, then the emperor would allow Itza and Popoca to marry. But Jaguarclaw had a plan to thwart the warrior. Is all lost?

Today there are two majestic volcanoes, Popocatepetl and Iztaccihuatl, which can be seen from Mexico City. They have been admired and revered for many generations, giving rise to various stories and myths about their creation. In The Princess and the Warrior, award-winning author and illustrator Duncan Tonatiuh tells us about one of Mexico's most beloved legends.

The integration of Nahuatl words (defined with a pronunciation guide in the glossary) into the storytelling provides a great opportunity to present and explore another facet of ancient Aztec culture.
